Bakemono Flashcards

Take a look at my Hiragana flashcards. They’re a sensible  little bit cheeky, visually-striking and full of colour.

The Bakemono Flashcard Set comes with:

  • 72 fresh and funny flashcards designed for today’s students, with enough alternative designs to allow you to pick and choose the cards you like

  • An additional 16 free community cards, featuring a modern take on some classic mnemonics.

  • A high-contrast version of all the cards, which puts an emphasis on the Hiragana over the pictures, increasing visibility.

  • An editable set of mini flashcards to print for your students

  • A blank set of cards for you to edit or add your own designs to, for a truly customizable experience

  • NEW Customisable Bakemono Hiragana Chart for your students

  • NEW Editable files

This is a project I intend to ‘tend’, so rest assured that any future Hiragana cards developed will be included in this purchase.

Why Design my Own Cards?

I don’t remember where my very first set of Hiragana flashcards came from, they just appeared in the haze of my first few years of teaching. Some were inherited, others I developed and some were from my time as a student. While my old cards did the job, they had been chopped and changed so many times over the years that they had become stylistically inconsistent.

While style isn’t a factor to everyone, you don’t need me to tell you how integral teaching Hiragana is to our job. Yet somehow I felt like I had overlooked one of the first things my students see in the classroom and I didn’t like the idea that it could be letting the rest of my work down. So creating my own set of Hiragana flashcards to stand alongside my stories and other illustrations felt like a natural progression. I hope to collaborate with other teachers, add to the free Community Cards and ‘tend’ this creation, so that it can become a resource that stands the test of time.
